Who’s Who
Officers
Dr Terry John,
Chair
-
Joint representative for the London Boroughs
I have been a Trustee of the Fund for many years. I felt at this time I should consider being an officer and undertaking a greater share of the responsibilities.
This fund is a vital support for individuals in difficulty, GPs, trainees, their families, and it behoves those of us who have been lucky in our professional life to hold a hand out to the ones who need help.
Dr Robert Barnett,
Vice-Chair
-
Joint representative for Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Derbyshire
Rob describes himself as a true scouser, having lived in Liverpool all his life. He graduated from Liverpool University in 1983 and has been a GP partner in Liverpool since 1987, although he now works part-time. He joined Liverpool LMC in 1988, becoming LMC Secretary in 1990.
As Secretary, Rob has come across many colleagues who have at some time or another fallen on hard times; having the ability to help them has been one of the more rewarding aspects of the role for him. He had been thinking of becoming a Cameron Fund trustee for some years. Now working part-time, it felt like the right moment to apply and help colleagues in another way. He says: “The current environment in which we find ourselves is distressing, and seeing colleagues and their families struggling in the way some are, is disturbing. Hopefully, by being part of the Cameron Fund, I can put my time and skills to good use”.
Following the death of his partner in 1990, Rob was left to care for an eight-month-old baby. Colleagues may remember him accompanying Robert to conferences in the early 1990s. That baby is now a trainee solicitor in London.
Rob enjoys travelling and is fascinated by penguins. He has visited them in many places and hopes to go on a cruise to see them in the Antarctic in the near future.
Dr Simon Parkinson,
Treasurer
-
Joint representative for Salop, Staffordshire, West Midlands, Leicestershire, Hereford & Worcester, Warwickshire and Northamptonshire
Dr Simon Parkinson has been a GP in Redditch for 34 years. He has been a member of Worcestershire LMC for most of that time and was LMC Secretary between 1998-2018. Simon was the Chair of GPC West Midlands between 2002-2007 and the GPC Elected Representative for Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Coventry and Warwickshire between 2010-2021.
Dr William McAlpine,
Deputy Treasurer
-
Joint representative for Scotland.
Following thirty-two years as a GP partner in a semi-rural Ayrshire practice, William was called back from retirement and undertook a variety of roles during the Covid pandemic “emergency”. He is now again retired from active medical practice but continues as a Cameron Fund Trustee, a role he has held since 2018. He was subsequently elected to the Cameron Fund Finance Committee and in May 2024 became Deputy Treasurer.
William was also active in his Local Medical Committee as a longstanding member until 2017, Chairman of Ayrshire and Arran LMC for three years from 2000 and Secretary for ten years from 2006.
He has also served on the Scottish GP Committee.
Outside medicine, William remains very busy, he enjoys travelling and holidays, reading and walking his dog Oscar. He has four children and seven grandchildren and seems to spend a lot of his time helping out with childcare when called upon.
